Nurse Call Connection

Plugs directly into the front of the patient station. Same port as the current pillow speaker.

HighLightX connects through the same nurse call jack on the front of the patient station that the pillow speaker uses today. No rewiring. No new infrastructure.

Pillow Speaker Stays Active

The existing pillow speaker plugs right back in. Both systems run in parallel, simultaneously.

HighLightX keeps a connection for the pillow speaker. Patients who prefer traditional controls still have full access. Nurses see one unified request stream regardless of how the patient submitted it.

Does patient data pass through the BYOD interface?

Only low-sensitivity information, like the assigned care team, preferred language and discharge schedule. Each hospital chooses what shows before deployment, unit by unit, to fit its clinical needs. BYOD has no clinical data, such as labs or diagnoses. The interface controls the room and submits service requests.

What nurse call systems are supported?

Hill-Rom, Rauland (Responder 5 and 4), Westcom, Anacom, Critical Alert, Jeron, and others. The HighLightX hub connects just like a pillow speaker – it installs directly to the same port. No new wiring, no system replacement.

Does the pillow speaker still work?

Yes. Both systems run simultaneously through the same nurse call infrastructure. BYOD commands join the existing signal stream alongside normal pillow speaker traffic. Nurses see one unified call stream regardless of how the patient submitted the request – phone or pillow speaker, it looks the same on their end.

Can we customize what patients see?

Fully. Every widget is modular and configurable per unit. Nurse call request buttons are built around your department’s actual call types – a med-surg floor might show water, blanket, pain management, and bathroom assistance, while a postpartum unit might show lactation support and newborn questions. Each request maps directly into your nurse call system as a specific call type, so staff see exactly what the patient needs before they walk in the room.

Room controls can run two ways. Simple on/off toggles go through HighLightX and your nurse call. With a smart-building partner (Schneider, Trane, Siemens, Johnson Controls), patients get dimming sliders and real-time state, and commands go straight to your building system. How many zones patients can control depends on what your building system exposes.

Does it work with Epic MyChart Bedside?

Yes. For hospitals running Epic MyChart Bedside, ComCierge surfaces directly inside the patient portal. Room controls, requests, care team info – all accessible without leaving Epic. No separate app, no separate login.

Is there anything installed on the patient's phone?

Nothing. It’s entirely browser-based. The patient scans a QR code, the interface loads in their browser, and they’re in control. The session opens and closes with the patient’s admission, transfer and discharge, and nothing is installed, stored or kept on the device.

What about patients who don't want to use their phone?

The physical pillow speaker stays fully functional. BYOD is additive – it gives patients a second option, not a replacement. Some patients prefer tapping their phone, some prefer the physical button. Both work.

What network does BYOD use?

Hospital guest WiFi or cellular. The patient’s phone never touches the clinical network. Commands route from the phone through the HatchMed Cloud to the hub, which sits on the hospital’s infrastructure side. Clean separation between patient-facing and clinical networks.
