A bed-exit alarm can't reach nurses from an unplugged bed

The cable between the bed and the wall is easy to break. Press-fit plugs bend pins, crack wall ports and pull loose when a bed moves. Once a bed is disconnected, its alarm never reaches nurse call, and staff often can’t tell.

Any bed, any nurse call

Works with Hillrom, Stryker, Linet, Umano and other beds with a 37-pin port, on any nurse call system. The 37-pin cable carries the bed’s full signal set.

A magnetic breakaway

It holds against a straight pull and releases sideways, which protects the pins and the wall port. Staff reconnect it by bringing the halves back together.

Installs on the port you have

The wall side fixes to the existing 37-pin port with two thumbscrews, in a few minutes per room. Staff connect a bed with one click, no training needed.

A bed-exit alarm can only help prevent a fall when it reaches the care team. BlackJack makes beds easy to connect, and quick to reconnect when a cable gets pulled.

In a published study, a large health system redesigned its bed-to-nurse-call connections with BlackJack. On the piloted units, patient falls dropped by up to 49% and falls with injury by up to 69%, with 39% fewer injuries overall.¹

Cable styles

Right-angle, inline and short patch cables, plus a magnetic wall brick, for high, low and horizontal jacks.

Cord-out dummy plug

For nurse call systems that clear the cord-out alarm only when something is plugged in.

Mounting brackets

Hold the wall cable firmly in place. One kit replaces the faceplate, the other mounts over the one you have.

XAF adapter

Adds the magnetic breakaway to a working 37-pin bed cable, so you can keep the cables you have.

Installation and resources

Installation

Fix the wall side first, then the bed. You need a Phillips and a flat-head screwdriver.

Wall side

Choose one of these two ways to connect BlackJack to the 37-pin wall port.

Right-angle wall cable

Plug the cable into the 37-pin port so it exits downward.
Tighten both thumbscrews.
Secure the cable with the metal bracket, a P-clamp about a foot below the port, or both.

Magnetic wall brick

Plug the brick into the 37-pin port with its arrow on top.
Tighten both thumbscrews.

Bed side

Plug the bed cable into the bed’s 37-pin port, under or behind the bed.
Tighten both thumbscrews.
Anchor the cable to the bed frame with a P-clamp as a second hold.
Bring the magnetic ends together to connect.

Cleaning and care

Clean BlackJack cables with routine room cleaning, and check each magnetic connector once a year.

Keep liquid off the connectors. Never put cleaning solution on the 37-pin or magnetic connectors. Fluid can get into the connection and damage the cable.

Clean the cable

Clean your hands and put on gloves.
Pre-clean with a cloth moistened, not soaked, with mild detergent and water.
Wipe with disinfectant on a cloth, or use a cleaning wipe.
Let the disinfectant dry, then wipe the cable with a cloth dampened with clean water.

Yearly maintenance

Disconnect the bed cable and clear the cord-out alarm. Replace any damaged cable.
Lift debris off each magnetic connector with the putty, then clean the pins with the WD-40 pen until every pin shows clean gold.
Brush the connector with the nylon brush. On the bed cable, also sweep the rigid edge across the pins.
Wipe off extra WD-40 and check the mounting screws.
Reconnect, test nurse call and bed exit, and reset both.
Record the date and technician for your warranty records.

BlackJack maintenance kit

Three brushes, two tins of magnetic putty, three WD-40 precision pens and a microfiber cloth, in one pouch. Inspect and clean each magnetic connector, wall side and bed side, at least once a year to keep the factory warranty.

Which beds does BlackJack work with?

Any bed with a 37-pin port, including Hillrom, Stryker, Linet and Umano.

How does it connect to nurse call?

Through the existing 37-pin port or the quarter-inch port on the headwall, on any nurse call system. A quarter-inch port carries one signal, such as bed exit or emergency call, while the 37-pin carries the bed’s full signal set.

Can we keep our existing bed cables?

Yes, if they work and have a standard 37-pin wall end. The XAF adapter adds the magnetic breakaway, and we confirm each cable’s condition and fit first. For the most durable setup, we recommend new BlackJack cables.
